Last Year (June 2023) I was lucky enough to see Red Kites in Dumfries and Galloway. Here there is a Red Kite feeding station on Bellymack Farm where you can see lots of Red Kites. I took lots of photos of these graceful birds, hoping I had got some good ones. My favorite photo I decided to turn into a painting (shown above).

After finding the right composition for my picture and drawing it out I started painting and soon realized how difficult it was to paint clouds. I had not really painted clouds before so this was something new, a challenge to overcome. I started to look at the sky more, looking for the right colour clouds for my piece. I took some more photos and practiced painting these, trying to get the right flow and texture. After experimenting a little, I thought I had more of an idea of what I was trying to achieve I then started painting my main painting.

To paint the clouds I used a lot of different colours. Some of these colours I painted on stripes of card to help me to get the right tones and hues.
After painting some of the clouds on the bottom of my painting I realized that some of these clouds looked like a mountain and I lake. I liked this new idea and the started on painting in a landscape in which my subject can fly in. This helped to give my subject a sense of place and scale. After finishing the background I set about painting my subject, the kite which was relevantly easy compared to the background.

Thankyou for reading my blog and I hope you like my finished new painting.
